Chronic low back pain remains challenging and somewhat enigmatic for clinicians, patients and the health care system in general. At any one point in time, chronic low back pain (CLBP) affects nearly 31% of the population and represents one of the most disabling conditions on earth. Spinal manipulation is an effective treatment option for CLBP patients, and chiropractors and other clinicians often combine this treatment approach with the prescription of custom-made foot orthotics. In fact, a 2009 survey conducted by the National Board of Chiropractic Examiners showed that 72.1% of chiropractors combine spinal manipulation with custom-made shoe orthotics in practice. However, recent literature reviews have pointed out that no high-quality clinical trials have evaluated the effectiveness of shoe orthotics for the treatment of LBP.
